Matakohe is central to so many great places to visit

Matakohe, Northland

Matakohe is nestled amongst the upper reaches of the Kaipara Harbour and situated on the Kauri Coast — Northland’s best kept secret.

Years ago, Matakohe was an area where the first settlers arrived, bringing old England with them in tree plantings and building designs.  In recognition to the settlers a pioneer museum was built, (The Kauri Museum), where visitors can experience the pioneer way of life, including gum digging and kauri milling. Matakohe also still has a number of historic colonial houses in use today.

Within half an hours drive from Matakohe, is Tinopai. The seaside village of Tinopai is located on the banks of the Kaipara Harbour – New Zealand’s largest harbour. Relax on the café deck with a coffee or takeaways, watch the tide come and go or drop a line in out over the wharf. Travel around a little further to a safe sandy bay or walk down the beach and view the harbour entrance.

Fun Fact: Matakohe produced New Zealand’s first New Zealand born Prime Minister Gordon Coates. A local memorial church and grounds are dedicated to him.
